Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings
MOUNTAIN DEW APPLE DUMPLINGS
Here at USA Pan, we are always receiving new and interesting recipes from our customers, bloggers and chefs. We love to try recipes that some recommended to us. We especially get excited when baking season starts in the fall. What really gets us going?? Apple season. There are many recipes. We’ve baked up apple pies, apple scones, apple crisps, apple cakes, apple muffins, apple turnovers…you get the idea.
But, there’s one apple recipe that we were VERY hesitant to try. It caught our eye awhile ago, but we’ve been putting it off. Why, you ask?? Well, it had a very odd ingredient. This recipe had been recommended to us several times, all with rave reviews.
It was a recipe for apple dumplings. Delicious, right? Warm, flaky pastry filled with soft, buttery apples. Bursting with cinnamon and spices. What could be wrong with that? Even better, this recipe only had SIX ingredients. So, what was our big problem with this recipe?? Well, one of the six ingredients was….Mountain Dew! Yup, you heard us. The soft drink, Mountain Dew. How could we?? Or, could we?? Try as we might, we just couldn’t resist giving this one a try. We had to see what the fuss was about. Could this really work??
So, we got to work.
Peel and slice 2 large apples. You want each apple cut into 8 wedges, so 16 total apple wedges.
Crack open 2 tubes of refrigerated crescent rolls. Separate the rolls into the triangles.
Wrap each apple wedge in a section of crescent roll, starting with the wide end and ending with the narrow end.
Place each rolled apple into your 9 x 13” USA Pan.
Melt one stick of butter (1/2 cup) in your USA Pan saucepan.
Once melted, stir in 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
Pour this deliciousness over your apples.
This is where things get a little weird…pour 12 oz of Mountain Dew all over the apples. Really, just do it!
Bake these at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Try to contain yourself!
We could hardly wait for these to come out of the oven. Finally, the timer went off and we pulled them out of the oven. After a few photos, we set to work tasting these elusive dumplings. And, guess what?? They were fantastic! We don’t know what kind of chemical reaction goes on between the Mountain Dew and the other ingredients to make these so darn fantastic, but frankly we don’t care. Even though we have deep respect for homemade pie crusts and classically made apple crisps, we also love this crazy dumpling recipe made with Mountain Dew. So, lesson learned folks. Don’t turn your nose up when you come across a recipe with unusual ingredients. Give it a try.
You might just find a new family favorite!!
